Proverbs Thought of the Day

Chapter 7 of Proverbs is the warning against adultery. The last verses of this chapter stand out to me:

"Now then, my sons, listen to me;
pay attention to what I say.
Do not let your heart turn to her ways
or stray into her paths.
Many are the victims she has brought down;
her slain are a mighty throng.
Her house is a highway to the grave,
leading down to the chambers of death."
- Proverbs 7:24-27

This brings to mind the story of Stephen Phillips, the ESPN sportscaster recently in the news. Stephen Phillips was married for 19 years, lived with his wife and 4 children and had a great career. He had an affair with a co-worker, a 22 year old young woman who was not willing to end the relationship. She began making harrassing phone calls to Mr. Phillips' wife, and even showed up at her door. Once the story broke out, the wife filed for divorce, is asking for custody of the 4 children, and Phillips has lost his job. He may not be literally dead at this point, but he'll probably say he feels like his life has ended. Too bad he didn't heed the words of these verses.

A few moments of pleasure has led to a lifetime of pain, a family destroyed. When we give in to our desires for illicit pleasure, the consequences are devastating. How can we avoid a similar tragedy? Stay in the Word daily. Stop and think: what does God say about this? Make the right choice, and live with a clear conscience. Because no one wants to be in Stephen Phillips' shoes right now.
