Wednesday Hodgepode

Welcome to another Wednesday and some more Hodgepodge, courtesy of Joyce, From This Side of the Pond.

1. Noah Webster was born this week back in 1758....besides the online version, do you own a dictionary?  Do you ever use the hardback copy or is your hunt for a definition strictly online these days?

I do still own an old dictionary, Webster's New Encyclopedia of Dictionaries, which I got back in 1992.  The pages are yellow.  I haven't used it in like, forever (or since the internet made it easy to go on dictionary.com).

2.  Should public schools ban Halloween celebrations?  What about other holiday celebrations currently under fire?

I don't think having holiday celebrations in school are bad, so long as everything is done properly.  Children getting dressed up is fun anytime of the year, but having a haunted house with scary characters jumping out at the kids is not.  Schools need to use good judgment.

3.  What's your favorite 'dog' movie?

Homeward Bound:  The Incredible Journey.  I always cry when I watch it.

4.  When were you last somewhere you'd describe as 'too quiet'?

At home.  My older kids were at work and my youngest was at school.  I was alone in the house.  That much quiet seemed out of place.

5.  Are you a neat cook or a messy cook?  In other words do you clean as you go or make a big mess and then deal with it later?

My kitchen has to be neat, or else I can't focus.  I clean as I go and try to keep the mess to a minimum.

6.  Did you hear about Felix Baumgartner, the skydiver who broke the sound barrier via parachute?  Was your first thought  COOL! or was your first thought CRAZY!  Are you adventurous?

I am so NOT adventurous!  I won't even go on a kiddie roller coaster, that's how unadventurous I am!

7.  What's not a word but should be?

Pronunciate.  It's a combination of the word pronounce and enunciate.  My daughter, the English major, has said this word a couple of times and it drives me nuts because I know it isn't a word.  At least if it got added to the dictionary I could learn to tolerate it.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

I'm one of the few Americans who has not seen any of the debates on television.  I've become more and more disgusted with politicians and their games.  It isn't about what I can or can't do, what I believe or don't believe, what a value or don't value.  It's all about belittling the other person to make themselves look better. Don't they see that, not only do they embarrass themselves, they embarrass the American people as well?

I haven't seen the debates either. I never watch them. I always thought a debate was all about making an argument for your point not berating the opposing side for theirs. Guess that's changed over the years. I had to go with My Dog Skip. Love that movie but never want to see it again...if you know what I mean. :)

I've watched the debates. I felt like the first debate was informative and it was good to hear the candidates speak for themselves. I hated the format of the last one...I do think by watching, you learn a little. Things that have been touted by the media as truths/lies are addressed by the candidates themselves. It's much harder to call someone a name to their face...to say they did something or meant something by their words that they didn't when they're standing right in front of you.

I didn't like the format of the last one..the candidates should not be walking around. They need to sit or stand behind a podium.

I have watched the debates and thought, "WHY do I keep putting myself through this?!" I like Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey as well!
