Open House Tour - Kitchen & Dining Room

Due to my having been on vacation last week, I wasn't able to post the open house pictures of my kitchen and dining room, so I thought I'd do that today. I'm sorting the vacation pictures, so don't worry; those will come later.

Let me give a little background on our house first: it's a 1,695 square foot Florida style home. By Florida style, I mean that it's an open concept house that places emphasis on outdoor living. The homes are designed to be comfortable in our warm Florida climate, though with the amount of humidity we have it doesn't always achieve its purpose.

Upon entering the house the first area is the "formal" part of the home, meaning you walk directly into the formal living room and beyond it is the formal dining room. On the right hand side are the bedrooms and bathrooms, and on the left is the "family" area, or the kitchen and family room. Let's focus on the kitchen first:

This is what you see when you turn from the formal part of the house into the kitchen. It's a 10x13 peninsula plan, which is an L-shaped kitchen with a peninsula instead of an island. I like that there's a window above the sink, even if it only looks out onto my neighbor's house. At least it lets in plenty of sunlight, as you may observe.

This is the view from the garage door. This house doesn't have a back door. Instead, entry is from the front door or the garage. It's convenient to have a door from the garage into the kitchen, especially when bringing in groceries. The reason the counter is so clean is because I was getting ready to cook and I absolutely must have the kitchen clean before I begin cooking. It's an obsession of mine. Otherwise the countertop is filled with whatever ingredients are being used for that day's meal.

Here's the view from the sink. That door is the pantry which affords me lots of storage space. See that clock to the left of the pantry door? I made that back when my older kids were little. I enjoyed working with ceramics and that was one of my "masterpieces". I'm surprised it's survived this long; it's probably about 18 years old. Beyond the kitchen, through the archway, is the dining room.

Our formal dining room is more of a family game room. We're a board game lovin' family, though lately our passion is for mexican train dominos. We love playing games, and this table provides plenty of space. It looks very formal, I know, but trust me, it gets alot of use. The flower arrangement on the table is what I put out for spring and summer. It was made by the wife of one of my husband's co-workers. In the fall and winter I trade it in for large candleholders in amber glass and wrought iron. This is the view from the archway in the picture above, and from the living room.

There's another archway from the family room into the dining room. That's the open concept thing going on. On the left hand side of the china cabinet is my scrapbooking station. That's another thing the dining room is used for: my scrapbooking hobby. Come to think of it, the one thing we do the least in this room is eat :D.

And this is the view from the corner of the dining room, by the window. Beyond the archway is the formal living room, but that'll be in my next post.

Again, sorry for getting this in a week late. Hopefully I'll have my next open house pics before the end of the day. Enjoy your time in my home!

To join in the open house tour, you can go here, here, here or here. All four ladies will be hosting. Have a blessed day.

Homeward Bound

We are headed home at this very moment. As fun as this vacation has been, I'm anticipating our arrival. Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home.

As for our vacation, stay tuned! Photos and details to follow! As my son E said, we had the time of our lives. As soon as I get the pics organized I'll put them up. Can't wait to share them with all of you!

Move It Mondays

It's funny that this post is called Move it Mondays, because we've been moving it everyday!! What a blessing this past week has been, and it's not done yet! This morning we've had breakfast and are just waiting for hubby J to finish getting ready, then we're off to Islands of Adventure and Aquatica. I've got lots of pics, stories, and details to tell, but they'll have to wait till Thursday. We head back home Wednesday but I don't think I'll have time to post anything before Thursday - we want to get as much out of these last few days as possible! I've missed everyone, and I've especially missed my home, but this has been the best vacation ever, and I praise my God for making it possible. Talk to ya'll soon!

Move it Mondays is hosted by Kristilea at In the Lord's Path. God bless.

The Simple Woman's Daybook

For Today, August 10, 2010...

Outside my window...the sky is blue with some white clouds, and the view is magnificent. Can't wait to get out there!

I am thinking...about all the fun we had yesterday. It was a great day!

I am thankful...to my God for providing us with so much more than we even dream of. He is so kind and generous.

I am going...to Aquatica today. It's the new SeaWorld waterpark that we can see from our hotel room.

I am wearing...my pj's. I'll be changing in a little while.

I am remembering...my oldest son, who's at home because he has to work and go to school. I think of him often.

I am currently...getting ready to have breakfast before heading out to another day of sun and fun.

I am reading...Hosea for morning devotions. That's it. No other reading going on right now.

I am waiting...for my daughter to finish up in the shower. Once she's done getting ready things speed up around here.

On my mind...sunshine and waterparks. I haven't been to a waterpark since my 20 year old daughter was a year old.

From the learning rooms...we learned a ton of stuff about wildlife at SeaWorld yesterday. As my son says, "It's fun, and educational!"

From the kitchen today...nothing. At least not from my kitchen. We have breakfast in the hotel room and the rest of our meals out at the parks. We pack snacks, though, to save money.

Around the house...again, nothing. I left everything neat, all laundry done, and I'm not the least bit worried about our house. But I will admit, I miss it already. Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home.

One of my favorite things...is not having to fix the bed in the morning. Someone else will come in later and do it for me.

A few plans for the rest of the week...Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, and Wet 'n Wild parks are all on the agenda. Hubby works all this week which is a bummer, but he feels better because the family is with him.

I wish I could download some pics, but this is an old laptop which doesn't have anywhere for me to plug in my memory card. You'll all have to wait till next week to see what we've been up to.

Wanna join in the fun? Visit Peggy at the Simple Woman's Daybook. God bless.

Move It Mondays

It's Monday morning, and it's raining. Hopefully it won't rain for long, though. I've had my morning bowl of Chocolate Cheerios, and now we're getting ready to go to SeaWorld, directly across the street from our resort. We arrived in Orlando yesterday afternoon safe and sound, praise God, and we are amazed at the view from our room! I can't wait to download some pictures (can't do it from this computer). We can see Aquatica, the new SeaWorld waterpark, directly to our left, and last night we saw the fireworks show from our beds! It was beautiful!! We are just in awe of what the Lord has blessed us with. We hope to enjoy this family time, especially since school starts August 23.

Another blessing: I found a ticket online called the Orlando Flex ticket. It's good for 14 consecutive days, and is a park hopper pass for Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, SeaWorld, Aquatica, and Wet 'n Wild. Two water parks and 3 theme parks, for one flat rate. After comparing over and over every alternative, this one was the best deal by far. So we'll be having fun, Lord willing, at several different places.

And yet another blessing: my daughter's song at church yesterday. So many people saying it was a blessing to hear her! And mama with tears that didn't want to stay put! It just fills me with joy to see my own daughter on stage worshipping God. Can a mother ask for anything more?

It's gonna be a blessed Monday and a blessed week. I pray the same for all. Have a great week!

Today's the Big Day!

We're getting ready for church this morning, then we'll be leaving for our vacation. We are so thrilled and thankful to our Lord and Savior for providing this trip for us! He is so good, all of the time.

My daughter will be singing today in church, another unexpected but appreciated blessing. The band BarlowGirl is performing at our church in September, so she and JB will be singing a BarlowGirl song. She's nervous but also excited. I'm just praising our Lord that she has this opportunity.

If I don't get on the computer much, know that I'm thinking of all of you and will get back as soon as I can! God bless you all, have a wonderful week resting in Him.

Observing My Senses

For Today, August 7, 2010...

I am seeing...hazy sunshine, blue skies creeping in. It's a good day to go fishing. Which is just what we're gonna do, with the Cub Scout pack.

I am feeling...excited because tomorrow we leave for our vacation. Yay! And happy because my daughter got home last night, safe and sound, praise the Lord.

I am hearing...The Fairly Odd Parents. My son is watching a little tv before we leave.

I am tasting...Total cereal with vanilla almond milk. Almond milk was recommended to me by Susan as a better alternative to soy milk. I'm glad she did - it's delicious!

I am smelling...my morning coffee. It's my one vice.

It just takes a moment to observe your surroundings. Won't you join me?
