I'm At It Again - Painting!

That's right, I'm painting again. This time it didn't start as my idea, though. Our master bedroom hadn't been painted in 9 years, and J said he was growing tired of the sage green. I thought it was pretty, but I could see the paint needed updating. I got a bunch of paint samples from Lowe's and brought them home to see what worked best with the furnishings. At the same time J told me he was going to Central Florida to work at some stores and would be gone for about a week. I thought it would be a perfect time to do the painting - since J is asthmatic, the smell of paint bothers him. I could do all the painting and the smell would be gone by the time he got home. So that's what I did.

When he left on Sunday, the bedroom looked like this:

When he got back on Friday, it looked like this:

Here's the view from the other side of the room:

In case you can't see much difference, let me show this view, of painting in process. The previous color was sage green; the new color is called Faint Maple. It's a taupe color, or what I like to call cafe con leche.

Because of the large wall unit in my room that I couldn't move because it's so heavy I wasn't able to finish the entire room before J got home. However, the paint samples I'd brought home started me thinking. The main living area, except for the dining room, hadn't been painted in over 5 years and was starting to look drab. I wanted to do something dramatic. I'd always loved the look of one wall a different color from the rest of the room, but couldn't find any combination of colors that worked well with the flooring we had. Just this March, though, we put in wood floors and new baseboards. I went through the paint samples and made my decision. I started in the formal living room, and came up with this:

The color is called Rare Sienna. Depending on the time of day, it might look more orangy or more red, but basically it's a kind of rust color (remember that Crayola crayon color burnt sienna? Pretty much like that). As soon as I started putting it on the wall I fell in love. The color is so beautiful! I couldn't stop at just this room, so I moved into the family room:

Since the furniture in our home is a golden maple color, it looks spectacular against the darker red tone. Here's a view of the kitchen:

The best part was J's reaction when he got home. R and I were sitting in the family room when he came in. We were expecting to hear him say something when he saw the living room. Instead, he went straight to the bathroom! J drove straight down from Central Florida, making no pit stops for 3 1/2 hours. He ran past the living room wall, into the bedroom, yet noticed absolutely nothing! We didn't know what to think, but R said, "Don't worry. The minute he walks out of the bedroom he'll be facing the family room, and he can't help but notice it then." Sure enough, J walked out and said, "Whoa!" R and I couldn't stop laughing! J came into the kitchen, looking totally surprised, and said, "I didn't know you were painting." I told him to turn around, and he let out another yell when he saw the living room! He turned back to me and said, "I thought we were going to paint the bedroom!" Nope, he still hadn't noticed! So I told him to go into the bedroom, and he was even more surprised than before! I asked how it was that he'd walked through the house and hadn't noticed or even smelled anything. Truth is, there's very little paint smell in the house. I bought Valspar paint from Lowe's, and it doesn't leave any lingering smell. It goes on smoothly too. Of course, J had other things on his mind when he came home - he needed a potty break! But he was all smiles as he looked at all that had been done while he was gone.
So, am I done? Not by a long shot! The rest of the walls in the main living area need to be painted, and the dining room will get a fresh coat too, since the garden green in there now doesn't work with the other colors. After seeing the Rare Sienna in the rooms, I've decided to go lighter on the rest of the walls so the rooms don't look too dark. The new color that'll be going on is called Churchill Hotel Maple. It's a much lighter shade than the Faint Maple in the bedroom, more like a beige color. I know it'll freshen the place up quite a bit. The darker wall will serve a purpose too - a dark accent wall recedes, giving the impression of a larger room. It tricks the eye into thinking the space is bigger than it really is. I can already see the difference, and I'm loving it! There'll be more pics to come as I continue to beautify my home. Stay tuned!

Observing My Senses

For Today, October 2, 2010...

I am seeing...new colors emerge as a burst of creativity brings forth a new look in my home. More on that to come.

I am feeling...tired from lots of painting, but glad for what's been accomplished.

I am hearing...my cell phone beeping, which means a new text message or email has come in.

I am tasting...nothing right now. Very shortly we'll be tasting burgers and fries, made by yours truly.

I am smelling...paint. I love that new paint smell, though I'm thankful Lowe's paint doesn't have long-lasting paint smell. It fades away pretty quick.

It just takes a moment to observe your surroundings. Won't you join me?

Time for a Laugh

Our Sunday school Bible study teacher sent this email to us, and I laughed so hard tears were rolling down my face. I just HAVE to share them!

The economy is so bad that...

...I got a pre-declined credit card in the mail.

...I ordered a burger at McDonald's and the kid behind the counter asked, "Can you afford fries with that?"

...CEO's are now playing miniature golf.

...Exxon-Mobil laid off 25 Congressmen.

...my ATM gave me an IOU.

...I saw a Mormon polygamist with only one wife.

...I bought a toaster oven and my free gift with purchase was a bank.

...if the bank returns your check marked "Insufficient Funds," you call them and ask if they meant you or them.

...Hot Wheels and Matchbox stocks are trading higher than GM.

...McDonald's is selling the 1/4 ouncer.

...Angelina Jolie adopted a child from America .

...parents in Beverly Hills fired their nannies and learned their children's names.

...my cousin had an exorcism but couldn't afford to pay for it, and they re-possessed her!

...a truckload of Americans was caught sneaking into Mexico .

...Motel Six won't leave the light on anymore.

...a picture is now only worth 200 words.

...they renamed Wall Street " Wal-Mart Street ."

...when Bill and Hillary travel together, they now have to share a room.

...the Treasure Island casino in Las Vegas is now managed by Somali pirates.

...Congress says they are looking into this Bernard Madoff scandal. Oh Great!! The guy who made $50 Billion disappear is being investigated by the people who made $1.5 Trillion disappear!

I was so depressed last night thinking about the economy, wars, jobs, my savings, Social Security, retirement funds, etc., I called the Suicide Hotline. I got a call center in Pakistan, and when I told them I was suicidal, they got all excited, and asked if I could drive a truck!

Hope you enjoy! Remember, it's all in fun.

The Friday Five

Happy Friday! I know I haven't been posting much this week; it's been pretty busy. I'll have to post more on that later! Right now, sit back and listen to some silliness from you-know-who:

1. Do people contact you on your cell or house phone more?
Definitely cell phone. I don't even answer my house phone most of the time.

2. Do you call or e-mail your friends/family more?
Actually, most of my communications now are via text message. It's quick and easy.

3. Does your cat/dog/bird/baby/stuffed animal have a livejournal/e-mail/myspace account?
No. That would not only be silly, it's a serious waste of time. I have enough to do keeping up with my own Facebook account.

4. What do you think will replace the internet?
Who knows! Just when I think they've invented everything something new shows up on the market.

5. How do you feel about VHS's not being made anymore?
I don't mind. DVD's are better quality and there's no tape to get unwound by little fingers LOL!

What about you? Wanna join in the fun? Visit the Friday Five, and have a fun and blessed weekend.

The Simple Woman's Daybook

For Today, September 28, 2010...

Outside my window...the sun is shining but clouds are moving in and the winds are picking up. It'll rain today, again, but praise God no hurricanes yet!

I am thinking...of my next home project - painting!

I am thankful...that my hubby made it safely to Central Florida and is working there now.

I am going...to continue painting the master bedroom. I like the look so far.

I am wearing...a brown and pink shirt, jean capris and white flip flops. Soon I'll be changing into a ratty old t-shirt and beige ready-for-the-trash capris so I can paint.

I am noticing...the paint in the rest of the house. We haven't painted the main living area except for the dining room in 5 years. It's time for some refreshing.

I am currently...painting the master bedroom and baseboards which were installed in March but never painted.

I am reading...Luke for morning devotions, just finished a second Agatha Christie mystery, and hope to get more books from the library today.

I am waiting...to finish painting the bedroom before I start my next project.

On my mind...the beautiful verses I read this morning. God speaks to us through His word in such an amazing way.

From the learning rooms...book report this week, and science projects starting soon.

I am pondering these words...‎"We turn to God for help when our foundations are shaking only to learn that it is God shaking them." - Charles West

From the kitchen today...sandwiches, most probably. I've got a lot of work to do and won't be stopping to cook.

Around the house...gotta get some laundry going, then paint paint paint!

One of my favorite things...a freshly painted room. It makes the house look brand new!

A few plans for the rest of the week: library today, Awana and Cub Scouts, finish painting the master bedroom, then some ideas I have for the living room/family room/kitchen will hopefully materialize. My creative juices are flowing!

Move It Mondays

Good Monday morning, folks! It's a bright new day (so far, it's supposed to rain this afternoon), and I have a bunch of stuff lined up. As a matter of fact, I've been to Lowe's already this morning because I'm starting a new project this week: painting the master bedroom. J said the paint looked tired, and since he's away this week for work, I decided it would be a good time to get that project done. So this is what I'm hoping today will look like:

Get bathrooms cleaned up
Start painting bedroom

The list may be short, but the day will be busy! Hope everyone has a fun, productive Monday.

Move it Mondays is hosted by Kristilea at In The Lord's Path. Have a blessed week!

Observing My Senses

For Today, September 25, 2010...

I am seeing...lots of sogginess after a whole lot of rain yesterday, and it looks like we're in for more today.

I am feeling...better today than I have the last couple of days. More energized.

I am hearing...toy commercials. Have you noticed how many more toy commercials start coming on in September? It's a reminder that Christmas is just around the corner.

I am tasting...bacon. Oscar Mayer bacon. I'm normally not so brand snobbish, but I've tried other brands and nothing comes close to Oscar Mayer. And that's no bologna ;-).

I am smelling...my morning wake up brew, coffee. It's not Starbucks fancy, but it makes me feel all warm inside.

It just takes a moment to observe your surroundings. Won't you join me?
